My Running Journal: 6.5K Now!

Today I Googled for tips on running in cold weather because it won’t be summer in New York in November, and came across an excellent blog, Running and the City,  by a seasoned New York City Marathon participant.

She helpfully describes the route starting from Staten Island all the way to the finish line at Central Park…and that was when I found out that there would be some uphill paths…but then again, what else could I expect? 42 kilometres of smooth, even roads? And apparently it would be quite cold, because she recommends wearing layers of cheap or throwaway clothing that we can shed along the way, as we get warmer during the run. Oh oh. A challenge indeed for a consummate tropical babe like me. I live in a hot Asian country and I don’t even use my air-conditioner, so cold weathers are always a bane to me. But no one signs up for a marathon (especially one in a foreign country!) expecting an easy life.

All the descriptions of the challenging route and weather left me with such an urgency that right after reading the post I changed and went straight down to the gym to train. Since I managed 5.5 km (3.41 miles) during my last run at the park, today  I wanted to beat my record yet again by aiming for 4 miles. As a testament to the motivational power of a blazing clear goal, yes, I achieved, oh no, surpassed that target! So today it’s 4.01 miles(6.5 km) in around 41 minutes.

Slowly but surely, I will get myself all fit and sprightly in time to conquer the 42 km come November next year.

My Running Journal: My First 5K…Woo Hoo!

This is a belated entry as this run practice took place yesterday evening. The best thing about running is the satisfaction and confidence that come from discovering the limits in ourselves that we can surpass…with every step made, every deep breath taken, the sense of possibility just grows – that maybe, maybe nothing is really impossible. Almost.

Yesterday there was a light drizzle when I reached the park where I had decided to practice. But the other runners and walkers carried on, so I decided to brave it after hesitating for 10 minutes. I am glad I did because the drizzle stopped after a while, and I ended up surpassing my target to run 5 kilometers. So woots, that was my first 5K. It was quite an interesting run because of the landscape at the park. I could choose to run on level ground, or do rounds near the field at the lower part of the park where I had to run slightly uphill at some points. Observing the humanity present also made the run a lot more interesting. There were families running together, a father-and-son pair taking a relaxing stroll while chatting with each other, a group of senior citizens practising their Tai chi to traditional Chinese music, and a good number of serious runners with their earphones on.

Running outdoors certainly beats the staleness of the gym! And the verdict: 5.48 km in 39 minutes. Yay!

My Running Journal: I Deserve a Burger Reward for This Round

3_TCSNYCM_Instagram_Team-for-Kids-Member-Fundraising_2_for WP Widget4th of December 2014, Thursday

Back to the running track at the Science University of Malaysia again, and this time I ran amidst wafts of deodorant, hair gel, and clothes detergent from fellow runners who cut past me and I, them. The sky was clear at 6 pm and I would have enjoyed myself more had my bangs not get in my eyes every so often, no thanks to the wind. Time for a hair trim or at least to get a headband.

I decided from the moment I began my run that today the target was simply to at least match my last run on Tuesday evening. So when the Nike run app showed 2.70 miles and 30 minutes (vs. Tuesday’s 2.70 miles in 33 minutes) I felt like throwing my arms in the air and thrusting my torso forward as if crossing an imaginary finish line. But I simply stopped and did my warming down moves and wiped my sweat.

It’s fried rice for dinner tonight. I decided the burger would be more suited for tomorrow–because it would then be Friday. Yippie! To both Friday and breaking my own modest record.
