My Running Journal: Another 6.5K… This Time on a Real Track!

I am now at a Starbucks cafe, waiting for my turn to grab the baton and run the last leg of the Penang round-the-island relay that is currently going on right now. I am the 12th and last runner, and my team is trailing behind, with the 7th runner leaving his point just 15 minutes ago. The leading mixed gender team, I heard, has completed up to the 10th station. So I have approximately 2 more hours to wait.

But anyway, back to my last run practice at the Science University of Malaysia track — I did not break my record distance wise but time wise I improved by 27 seconds. Woots!

For today’s run, I will be holding the baton later so I can’t hold my phone to track my run with the Nike app. But I will get my friends to try to time me. It’s going to be scorching hot by the time it’s my turn to run. Oh well. I will see how I fare later.

My Running Journal: 6.5K Now!

Today I Googled for tips on running in cold weather because it won’t be summer in New York in November, and came across an excellent blog, Running and the City,  by a seasoned New York City Marathon participant.

She helpfully describes the route starting from Staten Island all the way to the finish line at Central Park…and that was when I found out that there would be some uphill paths…but then again, what else could I expect? 42 kilometres of smooth, even roads? And apparently it would be quite cold, because she recommends wearing layers of cheap or throwaway clothing that we can shed along the way, as we get warmer during the run. Oh oh. A challenge indeed for a consummate tropical babe like me. I live in a hot Asian country and I don’t even use my air-conditioner, so cold weathers are always a bane to me. But no one signs up for a marathon (especially one in a foreign country!) expecting an easy life.

All the descriptions of the challenging route and weather left me with such an urgency that right after reading the post I changed and went straight down to the gym to train. Since I managed 5.5 km (3.41 miles) during my last run at the park, today  I wanted to beat my record yet again by aiming for 4 miles. As a testament to the motivational power of a blazing clear goal, yes, I achieved, oh no, surpassed that target! So today it’s 4.01 miles(6.5 km) in around 41 minutes.

Slowly but surely, I will get myself all fit and sprightly in time to conquer the 42 km come November next year.

My Running Journal: Liberty to Run

Today’s run: 2.6 km, 26 minutes, on the treadmill, started around 6.40 am. I ran 80% of the time and at around 1.6 km I started imagining what it would be like to cross the marathon finish line at Central Park. Would I be all sweaty despite the November cold? How would I feel — would I strut like a peacock or fall to my knees and shed tears of joy and gratitude while gazing heavenward?

And hopefully my body would recover fast enough so I could go sightseeing the day after.

Sure, there’s still a long way to go from my measly 3 km to the 42 km. But no harm dreaming right? 😀

My Running Journal: Pounding the Grounds of Vivanta by Taj, Rebak Island

This morning’s weather was again sunny and gorgeous, and having been more accustomed to this resort I had a more 20141123-163212.jpgproper training. I covered some of the hiking trail (without going anywhere near the jungle) and ran to the marina, shipyard and then back, and then covered the part on the left of my unit. 20141123-122709.jpgI did the walk and run routine since running on real grounds outdoors was quite a different ball game from pounding the treadmill. My legs felt heavier and I got breathless faster. It could be the stunning sceneries around me, but I am not 20141123-122833.jpgsure. But according to the Nike running app I did 1.75 miles (around 2.8 km) in less than 22 minutes — not too bad for me. But I also felt the strain on my thighs after the run, perhaps this was because of parts of the track that were slightly uphill.

As usual, it was shower and then heading to the cafe for the buffet breakfast. I won’t bore you with food pictures again, but it was still a wonderful breakfast.

Next time I will have a more serious training yet by carbo loading before my run, and I will see what difference that makes to my stamina.

My Running Journal: Nature’s Track and Runner’s Binge

3_TCSNYCM_Instagram_Team-for-Kids-Member-Fundraising_2_for WP Widget22nd of November 2014, SaturdaySo this was my training ground on this sunny morning at Rebak Island, a small island off Langkawi Island, a popular tourist spot in the north of Peninsula Malaysia. 20141122-102936.jpgKudos to me for getting up early for a 7.50 am run on a Saturday! But then again, with such gorgeous surroundings, it would have been a crime to sleep in — even on a weekend.

20141122-103159.jpgI decided it was a good time for an outdoor run because I have only run in the gym since I started training for the marathon. But I must admit that today I ran only for twenty minutes, and I am not sure how far because I wasn’t using any app to track my distance. I also brisk walked in between and stopped a few times to snap photos and to decide where to turn since I was not familiar with the grounds of this resort cum marina.

20141122-103328.jpgBy 8.30 am I had already showered and was well on my way to the cafe for my breakfast. It’s 10.30 am now and I have just finished eating. It’s lovely how running enhances my appetite.
